How we predict EES border queues

There are no sensors in the border queue and no official live feed of waiting times. Nothing here is measured on the day. Every result is a prediction, built from things that are known in advance, and we would rather show you the workings than pretend to a precision we do not have.

Who this is for

EES checks apply to most travellers on non-EU passports, whatever country the passport is from, when arriving in and when departing Europe (some exemptions apply, such as EU residence-permit holders). Flights within the Schengen area normally have no passport checks at all, so there is nothing to predict there, though countries do occasionally reinstate temporary checks.

The EU and the Schengen area are not the same

EES runs at the Schengen area's external border, which is not quite the same thing as the EU. Ireland and Cyprus are in the EU but not in Schengen, so EES does not apply there: there is nothing to predict for Dublin, Cork or Larnaca. And a few non-EU countries are in Schengen, namely Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein, so EES does apply when you travel to them.

The people in the hall with you

Departing passengers reach passport control one to three hours before their own flight, so the queue around you is not made by flights that already left. It is made by the passengers of flights leaving around and after yours. We work out how many scheduled seats' worth of non-EU passengers share the border hall during your time at the airport (for arrivals, it is the flights landing alongside you), and compare that with the rest of the day. A widebody counts for far more than a small jet, because the border processes people, not planes.

Compared with what the airport can handle

The same number of passengers is routine at a major hub and overwhelming at a regional strip, so we weigh demand against each airport's own capacity rather than one global threshold. That is why a small airport can read as busy on a modest number of travellers.

School holidays

At many holiday airports one country dominates the non-EU queue, today most often the UK, so we overlay term dates for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. At big international hubs, where the queue is every nationality, one country's term dates matter less, so we count them for less. Other countries' calendars are on our list to add.

What EES registration involves

First-time EES registration is estimated to take around 3 to 7 minutes per adult; once you are registered, re-entry is typically a quick face check. Travelling with a child under 12 usually sends your whole group to a staffed desk, because under-12s generally cannot use e-gates.

Why we will not give you a wait time in minutes

This is the question we get most, so here is the straight answer: nobody outside the border hall can honestly produce one, and we would rather say so than invent a number.

How long a queue takes is arrivals divided by throughput. We can estimate the arrivals side well, because flight schedules are published in advance. Throughput is the problem. It depends on how many desks and kiosks are staffed at that exact moment, how many travellers are enrolling for the first time rather than being re-verified, and how many families are being sent to a staffed desk. None of that is visible from outside the airport, none of it is published, and all of it changes through the day. Border posts have also been known to speed checks up or suspend biometric capture altogether when queues build, which can clear a hall far quicker than any model would predict.

There is no official live feed of EES waiting times either: no public sensors, and nothing published by the border authorities. So the only real-time signal available to anyone is a traveller standing in the hall reporting what they can see, and several sites collect exactly that. The difficulty is how much of it you would need. A live board covering a hundred or more airports needs a steady stream of reports at every airport, every hour of the day, and very few people stop while queuing for passport control to file one.

So it is worth reading the key on those boards. The better ones are upfront about what each number is, and what you are usually looking at is a same-time-of-day average from the past month, or a figure modelled from the day's flight schedule, which is the same raw material we use, rather than anything happening now. Reports also skew long, because people are far more likely to report a bad queue than to report walking straight through, and a figure labelled "live" can still rest on a single report made a couple of hours ago.

None of that makes those sites worthless. It does mean a confident-looking number in minutes carries far less certainty than it appears to, and we would rather not hand you one we cannot stand behind.

So we give a pressure band, from Very low to Very high, for the part that genuinely is knowable in advance: how many non-Schengen passengers are scheduled to be at the border when you are, against what that airport can comfortably handle. It is a prediction, not a guarantee, and we would rather be useful and honest than precise and wrong.
